Make a wonderful, light 10-minute Air Fryer Shrimp that is gluten-free too.  This recipe only uses TWO ingredients!

Air Fried Shrimp is one of the most popular recipes for the air fryer and it’s the best way to cook shrimp too outside of deep frying it of course!

This recipe is only going to use TWO ingredients!

That’s it, just those two ingredients and I guess I should say you also need some Grapeseed Oil Spray on hand, but you need this on hand anytime you prepare food in the air fryer. Olive Oil Spray can be used; however, it does not have as high of a smoke point as Grapeseed Oil Spray does.

This recipe will use Jumbo Cooked Shrimp, Tail-On, Peeled, and deveined.  This recipe can also be made in the Ninja Foodi using the Air Crisp basket to make Ninja Foodi Air Fryer Shrimp.

How long does it take to cook shrimp in the air fryer?

The length of time it takes to cook will depend if you are using raw shrimp or cooked shrimp.  For this particular recipe, it will take 10 minutes to cook at 360 degrees F using cooked shrimp. We used large shrimp or jumbo shrimp for this recipe.

Remember that all air fryers heat differently so it may take some trial and error to get that perfect shrimp, simply meaning that you may need to add a minute or two to your cooking time depending on how much heat your air fryer puts off.

Can you use aluminum foil in the air fryer?

Yes, you can use foil or you can also use these parchment paper sheets. The primary reason for doing this is to avoid any mess in your air fryer basket.

For this recipe, I chose to just use the basket as is; however, I typically end up using foil.  If you do use foil, be sure to roll it up on the sides so the air can circulate.

Be sure the aluminum foil is weighted down in the air fryer so that it does not blow and hit the heating element during air frying.

Can you make this in the Ninja Foodi?

This recipe can be added to your list of Ninja Foodi Recipes, it’s easy to make in the Ninja Foodi using the Air Crisp function.  The remaining instructions would all be the same for this recipe.

What fish fry should you use for shrimp?

The key to the flavor of this recipe is the fish fry.  This recipe uses shrimp and fish fry, so it’s important to get one with a lot of flavors.  We prefer to use Zatarain’s Fish Fry because it’s gluten-free.

I used the Crispy Southern Fish Fry to make this recipe, it does have a spicy kick to it.  The Seasoned Fish Fry is also really good for this recipe too.

Alternatives to fish fry would be seasoning your shrimp with a combination of either cornmeal or bread crumbs along with garlic powder, black pepper, red pepper flakes, or even old bay seasoning.

The final product can be drizzled with lemon juice before serving with cocktail sauce.

Tips for Making Air Fryer Shrimp:

When using frozen shrimp, the first thing you will need to do is defrost it by placing it into a strainer or bowl and running cold water over it. This will loosen up any ice that has formed on the shrimp.

This process can be done right before cooking shrimp, the shrimp can stay frozen until you are ready to cook it.

Once this is done, the shrimp will be coated with the breading, in this case, the fish fry, and then cooked in the air fryer at 360 degrees F for just about 10 minutes.

Remember as mentioned above that air fryers do put off a different level of heat, so use this as a guide and be sure that yours is cooked to your preference. I am also using cooked shrimp, so I’m simply heating it up with this recipe and getting the breading crisp.

How do you store leftover shrimp?

Leftover shrimp can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days, it can be reheated in the microwave for 3-4 minutes or reheated in the air fryer at 350 degrees F for 3-4 minutes.

Remember that this shrimp is best served freshly out of the air fryer.

  • 16 oz Bag of Jumbo Cooked Shrimp Tail-On, Peeled & Deveined
  • 1 Cup Zatarain’s Fish Fry More if needed
  • Grapeseed Oil Spray

  • Defrost the shrimp by running it under cold water to remove any ice and lightly defrost it.

  • Spray the air fryer basket with grapeseed oil spray.

  • Add the fish fry to a bowl and coat each shrimp.

  • Place the shrimp in the air fryer basket.

  • Coat the shrimp with grapeseed oil spray.

  • Cook for 5 minutes at 360°F.

  • Carefully turn the shrimp and add a coat of grapeseed oil spray.

  • Once turned, cook for an additional 5 minutes at 360°F.

  • Remove the shrimp and coat with grapeseed oil spray lightly to moisten the fish fry.

  • Repeat steps if necessary for the remaining shrimp. I was able to do 1/2 the bag and then cooked the rest of the bag in a second batch.

Notes: I used ‘cooked’ frozen shrimp for this, breaded it, and essentially warmed it up/cooked it in the air fryer.
This can be done with raw shrimp too if you prefer, the same method. It can also be cooked faster if you need a faster cooking time at 400°F for 6 minutes. We like the taste and texture of 360°F for 10 minutes.
